Hickory striped fabric originated in America in the late 19th century as a hard-wearing cotton fabric for workwear, developed specifically for railway workers, engine drivers and mechanics. It was named after hickory wood to symbolise its extreme durability. This distinctive pattern was extremely practical, as it cleverly concealed soot, oil and grease during long shifts on steam locomotives. In the 1920s, the fabric became the official industry standard, cementing its legacy as an iconic symbol of American railway history, before eventually finding its way into workwear specifically designed for industrial activities.
